Pet Business Ideas

The pet business has just exploded as an industry. People are willing to spend a lot of money on their pets to make sure they are healthy and are being well taken care of. Here are a few pet business ideas for the pet loving entrepreneur.

Pet Sitting:
There are a lot of reasons why people don't want to either board their pets or leave them with family and friends. Maybe the pet has chronic health problems or the owners simply want to leave their pet in a familiar environment where they feel safe. When this type of pet owner is going to be away from home, there is only one solution available, hire a pet sitter to come to their home and take care of their pets while they are gone. This business can be started as an owner/operator where you are the only pet sitter available or when your business starts to grow, contract additional pet sitters such as pet loving retirees or students. You can market this business through pet related businesses that are currently in your community such as veterinarians, pet supply stores, dog trainers, dog walkers and pet grooming businesses. People will want to hire a pet sitter for time periods of a night out, a weekend away or for several weeks, so develop a fee schedule for both short and long term periods.

Dog Day Care:
Dogs are like people and are very social and therefore will be better behaved and confident if they are allowed to be around people and other dogs during the day. For that reason, dog day care facilities are becoming more popular as an alternative to leaving their dogs at home while they are at work for dog lovers. A dog day care is not a kennel, which boards animals for short or long periods of time. A dog day care center is where the dog is dropped off in the morning and picked up in the evening or anytime during the day depending on the owners schedule. If you have a large yard and your neighbors don't mind the barking you could start this business in your own back yard. A better alternative would be to rent a commercial space and convert it into a dog care center with water features, fenced outdoor space and indoor couches and play areas so your furry clients can have all the comforts they're used to at home. Or you can also incorporate the latest in technology and install web cams throughout your facility so owners can log in at work and see live footage of their dogs playing.

Dog Obedience Training:
This is a multimillion dollar industry that continues to grow as dog owners realize the benefits of professional obedience training. You can start this business by having clients come to your home for one-one-one training or group training sessions. If your home isn't suitable for this type of activity, you can always travel to your clients homes for one-on-one personalized training. You could get creative and strike a deal with local schools and community centers to use their facilities on nights and weekends for your dog obedience training sessions. Although most areas don't require you to be certified by a recognized association, it would be to your benefit to receive professional training and become a certified instructor. Not only can certification be used as a great marketing tool when persuading people you are the right trainer for their dog, but having the proper credentials will also mean that you can charge a premium price for your services.
