Tips for Choosing a Business and Website Name

It's very important to get your business name right. You may already have decided on a business name but it's not too late to change it. Many large organizations change their business and product names all the time. Your business name is going to be your brand.

I named my business and website Start a Home Based Internet Business because I specifically wanted to provide information on how to work from home on the Internet. This business name describes exactly what the business and website is all about.

Here are a few things to think about when choosing your business name and/or your website name:

Make it easy to remember - don't get complicated.

Make it easy to pronounce. People feel uncomfortable if they phone you and pronounce your business name incorrectly.

Make it easy to spell

Stir the customer's interest - make them want to ask more. For example, "Jane's Baskets" doesn't exactly peak my interest where "Baskets on a Budget" is more interesting.

Make it positive sounding - optimistic

Make it changeable - "Acme Gift Baskets" might want to expand their business into balloon sculptures some day.

Make sure it doesn't confuse you with someone else

Make it attract the kind of customers you want -"Dog and Cat Shop" sells all sorts of pet products to individuals who love their pets.

Make it fun, (if it's appropriate for your business) -"Gossip" is an excellent name for a hair salon.

Try not to use an individual person's name or surname such as Joe's Landscaping or Smith's Plumbing. If you ever decide to sell the business it would be difficult with such a personalized business name.

Brainstorm - think about how you want people to feel when they see or hear your name

Think of humorous aspects of what you do

Check other names and trademarks on the internet

Check domain names

Does your name sound cheap or expensive
